Throughout the year Nene Park is host to a wide variety of events and activities for all ages and interests.  From guided walks to craft workshops and our regular programme of holiday activities for children.  Click here to see what is coming up soon.

Events

Nature tots Nature tots A fun monthly outdoor parent and toddler group with a nature theme. Each session will include a messy craft activity, time to explore the beautiful outdoors, story and song time....

A fun monthly outdoor parent and toddler group with a nature theme. Each session will include a messy craft activity, time to explore the beautiful outdoors, story and song time. Sessions run on the second and fourth monday of the month with a different theme each month.  Please note, sessions on the fourth Monday are a repeat of the session on the first Monday.  Please only book one session per month.

*There will be only one session in December.*

Much of the session will take place outside, so please dress for the weather. 

Meeting Point: Discovery Den. 
Time: 10am-11.30am
Age:  2yrs+

Adults may bring up to two paying children.  Maximum of 1 adult per booking.

May 2021 theme: Flowers and growing.

June 2021 theme: Fairies and elves.

July 2021 theme: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

August 2021 theme: Ponds.

September 2021 theme: Minibeasts on land.

October 2021 theme: Autumn.

We are pleased to welcome back our home educators group although we have a few changes to meet current covid secure processes Here at Ferry Meadows we will be running outdoor learning sessions every month for home schooled children. Each session will have curriculum and nature focused activities, with each month having a different theme.  Sessions run on the second and fourth Monday of the month, however please note, sessions on the fourth Monday are a repeat of the session on the first Monday.  Please only book one session per month.

Much of the session will take place outside so please dress for the weather. 
                                  
Meeting Point: Outside the Discovery Den. *Please note September and November sessions meeting on the grass next to the toilet block at Lakeside end of Ferry Meadows*
Times: 1.15pm-3.15pm. 
Suitable for: Ages 5-11yrs
All children attending need to have a booked place.

May theme: Explorers.
June theme: Innovation - making and testing.
July theme: Water and the creatures that can be found living in the lakes and river in the park.
August theme: Plants.
September theme: Minibeasts.
October theme: Birds.
November theme: Firelighting/campfire.
December theme: Making different items with a Christmas/winter theme.

Join our regular social walking group to keep fit, explore new areas of Nene Park and make new friends.  Walks are led by a member of the Nene Park Team and are approximately 5 km  (3 miles) in distance.  Each month we will explore a different area of Nene Park.

May: Ferry Meadows: Meadows walk.     Meeting point: Lakeside Car Park, Ferry Meadows

June: Lynch and Lock walk    Meeting point: Outside the Visitor Centre, Ferry Meadows

July: Sutton Meadow    Meeting point: Lovers Lane, Sutton

August: East Railway    Meeting point: Splash Lane Car Park, Castor

September: Normangate and Waternewton Loop    Meeting point: Splash Lane Car Park, Castor

Join June from Semperart at this beginners workshop to make your own unique fused glass.

During the session you will
* Learn about the nature of glass to inform your designs and creations
* Design the pieces you intend to make
* Choose a variety of glass to create your designs
* Learn how to use inclusions in your pieces (copper, silver)

Once your pieces are complete, they will be fired in a kiln.  This can take up to 48 hours, depending on the processes used, so your pieces can be collected in approximately one week, from the visitor centre.

Suitable for: 16yrs+ under 18's must be accompanied by an adult

Tree Hunt and Broomsticks Tree Hunt and Broomsticks Once again, the witch has lost her items in the trees. Find the trees, find the items and she'll reward you with your very own broom stick to fly away home on.

Once again, the witch has lost her items in the trees. Find the trees, find the items and she'll reward you with your very own broom stick to fly away home on. Children will make their broom stick from the Park's wood resources.

The event may involve children walking off the Park's footpaths.

Each group will start the event at a separate time. Maximum of 4 people per group, one must be an adult. Each group can make up to 2 broomsticks.

Suitable for: children aged 5 yrs +

Meeting point: Please note different meeting points for different dates.

26th October - Milton Ferry Bridge, Ferry Meadows.
27th October - Thorpe Meadows Car Park.
29th October - Badger Play Area, Ferry Meadows.

Together we can build homes for nature. Come along and make a nest box under the guidance of our rangers. Birds will use the boxes to roost and shelter in the winter months and will be familiar with it, ready for nesting in Spring next year.

Come and make a scarecrow Come and make a scarecrow Come along to make a scarecrow! The scarecrows will be used to decorate the Park for half term.

Come along to make a scarecrow! The scarecrows will be used to decorate the Park for half term.

Maximum of 6 people per group. All materials: straw, newspapers and a sack head are provided. We have limited old clothes so please do bring some old clothes you no longer want or need to dress your scarecrow. Please note that any clothing or accessories used may not be able to be returned after the event.

The scarecrows will be left in place for the whole of half term to decorate the Park. 

Members of the public will be invited to vote for their favourite scarecrow and there will be a prize for the scarecrow (makers) with the most votes.

Get ready for the Christmas season  and make your own set of jewellery for yourself or as a gift, or just an excuse to try something new.

During the class we will make a bracelet, necklace and earrings using a variety of jewellery making techniques.  All materials are included to make these items and Donna will guide you through the different skills needed to make or repair your own jewellery.

Donna McKean Smith is owner of Riverside Beads and has been teaching jewellery making for nearly 20 years. Please note that colours and styles may vary on the day.

If you have already attended a beginners workshop, you can take the next steps to create a beautiful dragonfly. In this workshop June will teach you techniques to cut your own glass and use a mould to create the shape you are looking for. 

You will learn about the different types of glass and how they are used in fused glass making.

The dragonfly will take between 1.5 and 2 hours to make.
